First Visit

First Visit

front door to clinic

Initial visits are usually 90 minutes. You will complete paperwork which includes some basic health history, and the situation which prompted you to make this appointment. We will discuss this a bit and then I will perform a physical exam. I do not take a detailed health history on this first visit for several reasons: usually people come in because they are in pain and the treatment to feel better is more important than talking AND I do not need your detailed history for this first treatment. Because this is your first treatment with me, I will work a bit slower in session and pay close attention to your responses.

If your situation is other than physical pain – this initial visit will progress a bit differently. Each session is tailored to you and your needs. We will explore your health concerns and possible impact other factors which are part of your life.

The physical exam uses some diagnostic tools that are unique to acupuncture and Asian Medicine such as tongue observation and palpation of wrist/ankle pulses for diagnosis. I often palpate certain acupuncture points for assessment as well.

Getting the most out of treatment

For the best treatment results, keep a few things in mind:

  • Please show up on time
  • Don’t eat a large meal before your visit
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes
  • Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with your acupuncturist
  • Refrain from overexertion, drugs or alcohol for at least six hours after treatment
  • Keep all of your appointments, as each visit builds upon the previous ones

How treatment works

To treat any Qi imbalances, fine, sterile needles will be inserted at specific acupuncture points along the meridian pathways.  Acupuncture points related to specific organs, based on your unique issues and symptoms are used.

Other related therapies may be used, such as cupping, Gwa Sha or moxabustion. I have studied with healers in many modalities and have a large toolbox. I will use whatever I think will be the most beneficial for you in each session.

Your role in the healing process

Your actions are a key component to healing. Focusing on your health and committing to a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take for your well-being.

Even after your symptoms are resolved, acupuncture can assist you in maintaining your health, and possibly prevent future imbalances. The more you incorporate acupuncture and wholisitc medicine into your life, the more you’ll learn to nurture your body, mind and spirit.

Acupuncture is not an instant fix.

True healing takes time and dedication. Depending on your current health and symptoms, you could feel better right away, or you may need treatments for weeks, months or years to achieve the results you want.

Acupuncture and Asian Medicine offer a safe and effective holistic health care system. This natural approach can both resolve symptoms and enhance your overall health.

By taking the right steps and planting the seeds of health, you are on the road to a healthier you!
